Many graduates of educational institutions begin to worry ahead of time that they will not be hired due to the lack of minimal work experience. Anna Kandeeva, an independent HR expert, founder of the FB “HR Generalist” community decided to dispel myths that a young specialist cannot get a job in a company with a good reputation.
As a mother of two teenage children, I can say that in our house conversations related to career guidance and future work are common and quite frequent. My daughter is a first-year student at State University, and my son is in 11th grade. Recently we had a dispute about the possibility, or rather, the impossibility of being hired without work experience in a decent company. In the context of the dispute, by a decent company we meant an organization that operates in compliance with labor laws. An organization in which employees receive a market white salary, with a developed corporate culture and values, where there is a social package and other benefits for employees.
My opponents assured me that it is impossible to get a job in such a company without experience. Wanting to dispel their unfounded beliefs, I decided to conduct a survey in the professional community of personnel officers and HR specialists in a group on the social network Facebook on the topic: “Why are you ready to hire a university graduate without work experience?”
The most popular answer (33%) is the statement that the employer is ready to hire yesterday’s student because he had an internship (internship) in the company and showed himself well.
And this is understandable: when an employer decides to hire a graduate, it is possible to choose a suitable one only after having tested it in practice. Therefore, the most reliable and correct way to get into the company of your dreams as a hired employee is to prove yourself well on an internship. Even if you are entrusted with uninteresting, routine work, which, in your opinion, does not reflect your skills and aspirations as a future professional at all, take it up and do it as efficiently as possible. Thus, you will demonstrate your dedication and focus on results. In this case, the result you should strive for is to prove yourself from the best side.
The second most popular (29%) response from HR professionals is related to the fact that they are interested in raising their young staff.
Very often companies are willing to invest in the training of young, promising employees. It is better to immediately instill in young specialists the corporate values and rules of work in the company than to retrain experienced workers who have been taught by someone else. As a rule, with this approach, companies select among graduates or undergraduates and look at their professional potential. Here, in addition to the required education, soft skills – flexible or, as they say, soft skills will be assessed: the ability to work in a team, result orientation, the ability to work with information , etc. And if during the selection process you demonstrate sufficiently strong personal competencies required by the employer, then the company will certainly make a decision in your favor.

Next to the previous answer (28%) is the option associated with the desire to employ graduates of specialized universities who are already ready to work, since they received training at the university that prepares specialists according to professional standards corresponding to the requirements of the employer. For example, the enterprises of Rosatom State Corporation are actively cooperating on the issue of employment with such universities as MEPhI, MISiS, MIPT.
The rating of popular answers, but with a smaller number of votes (7%), also included the opinion that companies are ready to give preference to specialists without experience, but with already formed Hardskills (“solid” skills). These are professional, technical skills that can be clearly demonstrated. For example, the skill of touch typing, driving, knowledge of the programming language, etc. These skills can be obtained by students, both by studying a profession and by continuing education programs. And, if there is such an opportunity, to combine basic and additional training, for example, to study at a driving school or in programming courses, do not miss it – it will definitely come in handy for you. The more you invest in your education, the more profit you will get in the future.
The rest of the options received approximately the same number of votes, there are not very many of them, but you should also pay attention to them.
So, some employers continue to look at the GPA in the diploma and, of course, give preference to those graduates who received a red diploma. The logic is simple: since the graduate was able to overcome all the hardships of study and mastered the whole theory with honors, it means that he will show the same diligence in the work process.

Well, closes our rating of reasons why employers are willing to hire a young and inexperienced specialist, answer : “Friends or parents asked to find a job for their son or daughter “. And here we are talking not only about nepotism and matchmaking, as you might think. Very often, especially in the industrial sphere, there is a concept of family or ancestral succession – transfer of professional experience from father to son. If an employee is a respected and professional specialist who has worked at the enterprise for a long time and has proven himself well, there is no doubt that his son or daughter will be good workers. The employer is ready to hire a young specialist, understanding in what family he was brought up, what values and guidelines were instilled in him. The probability of making a mistake in such a specialist is small. As they say, an apple falls not far from an apple tree.
In the end, I would like to say that the myth that young professionals cannot find a decent job, and that such a problem really exists, is not entirely justified. My colleagues and I confirm the opposite. Employers are ready to hire specialists without experience, but they must be promising in terms of training and development, motivated and motivated to work productively. So everything is in your hands!
